UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas started the season on a high note as Pam Lastimosa, EJ Laure and Ria Meneses led the Tigresses to an easy 25-11, 25-12, 25-14 win over University of the East on Saturday in the opening of the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the MOA Arena.

Skipper Lastimosa made 12 points for UST, while rookie sensation Laure had eight and Meneses added seven.

Looking to make up for a disappointing 5-9 win-loss record last season, its worst in the past 16 years, UST kicked off the tournament with an emphatic win.

“We started the season right, we started the season with a win,” said UST coach Odjie Mamon.

The Tigresses dominated the match, leading by as many as 14 points in the first set and finishing the match in just 74 minutes.

However, Mamon downplayed the hot start and said the true test will be against the league powers in their next matches.

The Lady Warriors absorbed their 32nd consecutive loss dating back to 2011.

“It’s not really a gauge kasi UE is a rebuilding team, they have a new coach and a new system,” said the lanky Tigresses mentor. “Not naman to underestimate UE but our real test will be the next games.”

Angelica Dacaymat scored six points for UE, while team captain Shaya Adorador added five and returning player Leuseht Dawis had two points.
