UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas coach Kungfu Reyes was infuriated after losing their season opener, but he was far from fuming despite remaining winless after their loss to defending champion La Salle on Saturday in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament.

UST is down 0-2 after absorbing back-to-back losses from last year’s runner up Ateneo in the season-opener and La Salle a week after, but Reyes was a picture of a proud mentor after seeing the fight in his wards against the Lady Spikers.

“Ang kagandahan nito, natatalo kami pero unlike last year na kapag ganito ang lamang, umaayaw na talaga kami,” said Reyes after their 23-25, 25-16, 14-25, 22-25 loss to La Salle.

“Pero ngayon pinipilit naming ilaban at lumalaban naman ang mga players at ‘yun naman ang importante sa ngayon,” he added.

UST looked to stun La Salle early in the game when the Tigresses dominated the second set.

The Espana-based squad, however, simply handed the third set to the Lady Spikers. But the Tigresses refused to surrender in the fourth set in cutting a 9-18 deficit down to four, and keeping the contest tight before the green-and-white volleybelles sealed the win.

“Pangit ang laro. May mga lapses, which is normal naman,” said Reyes. “Ang importante lang, especially in the fourth set, medyo malaki ang agwat. Pero sabi nga namin iangat lang yung score namin.”

UST, dubbed as one of pre-tournament title favorites, is now at the bottom tied with University of the East and Adamson University but Reyes is keeping a positive attitude.

“Napakaaga pa, 0-2, marami pang pwedeng mangyari,” he said. “Top two teams ang nakatalo sa amin, nakakuha kami ng experience na maganda.”

“Sink or swim na lang ulit,” Reyes added. “Kokontrahin namin ang agos, hindi pwedeng go with the flow lang kami. Kailangan i-deliver pa namin ang character ng mga bata.”

UST goes for its first win when it faces UE on Wednesday.
