SHOLA Alvarez showed the way as Jose Rizal University overcame undermanned San Sebastian College, 27-25, 25-23, 22-25, 16-25, 15-12, in the NCAA Season 93 women’s volleyball tournament on Monday at The Arena in San Juan.

Alvarez, the Lady Bombers skipper, dropped 28 points from 24 kills and four blocks.

JRU coach Mia Tioseco was pleased to see her wards step up against a former league champion, even though SSC now only has eight players on the roster and only seven saw action on Monday.

“Sobrang happy na nanalo kami kasi veteran team sila and may winning legacy sila kumabaga. Two years in a row silang nasa finals,” said Tioseco.

“And siyempre it’s a very big step for us na at least nakapanalo kami sa ganoong ka-veteran na team. Happy ako sa girls dahil ngayon masasabi nila na they can compete with other teams,” she added.

Dolly Versoza also added 15 points for JRU, which was coming off a five-set loss to San Beda.

Nikka Dalisay made 17 markers for SSC, while team captain Joyce Sta. Rita and Daurene Santos each had 16 points and Dangie Encarnacion contributed 15.

SSC gave JRU 44 points through its errors.
