FAR EASTERN University recovered from a set down to beat Univesrity of Sto. Tomas, 20-25, 25-20, 25-15, 25-20, on Wednesday to tighten its grip on a place in the top half of the leaderboard in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Tamaraws scored their seventh win in 12 outings, taking a share of third University of the Philippines (7-5) was handed a three-set loss by National University (6-6). 

The Tigresses, meanwhile, are on a brink of elimination as they fell to a 5-7 slate.

The chances of advancing is dim for UST, as it has the season’s surprise package UP and midtable National U for its final two assignments.

Bernadeth Pons scored 20 points on 17 attacks, one block and two service aces, while registering 16 digs for FEU.

Sophomores Toni Basas and Jerrili Malabanan also provided FEU with 12 and 11 markers, while skipper Mary Palma added 10.

“‘Yun talaga ang pinu-push namin na matanim sa utak ng players, ang makapwesto kami ng pabor sa amin,” said FEU coach Shaq de los Santos.

“Kasi kung magbibigay pa kami ng another talo para sa team namin medyo maga-alanganin ang posisyon namin. But of course may two games pa kami na kailangan ipanalo hangga’t maaari, (kaya) paghihirapan namin ’yun.”

The Lady Tamaraws next face University of the Philippines before taking on also-ran Adamson in their final elimination-round match.

FEU registered nine service aces against UST’s four. The Lady Tamaraws committed 25 errors but also took advantage of the Tigresses’ 32 miscues in a match that lasted two hours.

“Unang-una mamuhunan kami sa service at saka receive kasi ’yun ang key para mas maging madali sa amin ’yung magiging opensa namin,” said De los Santos.

“Kasi kung magservice kami ng kargado talaga so madali lang maibabalik sa amin so that’s the time na makaka-attack kami ng maganda.”

“So more on sa service-receive kasi depensa lagi naman namin ginagawa and ‘yun din ang lagi naming problema, ang service saka receive, good thing naging maganda ang naging performance namin,” he added.

Cherry Rondina scored 17 points for UST, while skipper EJ Laure and graduating open spiker Mela Tunay added 11 markers apiece.
