NAKHON RATCHASIMA, Thailand – The Philippine team continued to make heads turn in the 10th AVC Asian Youth Girls Volleyball Championship after a four-set upset of India on Sunday to make the quarterfinals of the nine-day, 13-team meet at the MCC Hall Convention Center at The Mall here.
The Filipina volleybelles dropped the opening set before coming back to claim the next three, 19-25, 25-11, 25-20, 25-22, for their second straight win in the tournament.
The victory was a fitting follow up to the team’s 24-26, 25-22, 21-25, 25-21, 15-13 stunner of Australia on opening day Saturday.
In its first and only meeting with India prior to Sunday’s match, the Philippines lost 7-25, 9-25, 13-25, during the 2003 edition of the biennial meet held in Thailand.
Up next for the Filipinas is four-time champion China on Monday, although they are already assured of advancing to the Final Eight after emerging as the top two teams in Pool C together with the Chinese.
“We have achieved our goal of reaching the quarterfinals. Now we aim for the semis. No matter what, we have achieved our goal, and that is a clear sign that we have the talent and capability to compete internationally,” said Philippine Volleyball Federation (PVF) president Geoffrey Karl Chan, who is also head of delegation.
