A new era begins for National University as Roger Gorayeb begins his coaching stint with the Lady Bulldogs when they battle the skidding University of Santo Tomas Tigresses in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena on Wednesday.

The 2 p.m. encounter marks the return of Gorayeb to the league since leading the Ateneo Lady Eagles to back-to-back runner-up finishes in 2012 and 2013, respectively.

Gorayeb, who was offered the job in mid-December, took over Ariel dela Cruz as NU coach and only had one practice with the Lady Bulldogs a  day before the match against the Tigresses.

With the multi-titled mentor on board, NU is seeking to change its fortune as it currently occupies fifth spot with a 2-3 (win-loss) card.

Gorayeb though is expected to come late in the game as he will be coming from the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament where San Sebastian has a scheduled game at The Arena in San Juan.

Meanwhile, UST hopes to get a lot out of the week-long break it had as it tries to end a four-game losing slump.

The Tigresses are again expected to lean on rookie EJ Laure, but also hope to get a lot from underperforming seniors Mela Tunay, Jessey de Leon, and skipper Pam Lastimosa.

The Espana-based school is currently at seventh spot with a 1-4 (win-loss) record.

In the main game, University of the Philippines tries to recover from its heartbreaking five-setter loss the last time as it tangles with Adamson at 4 p.m.

Coming from an 18-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-15, 11-15, meltdown against defending champion Ateneo on Sunday, the Lady Maroons will be bannered anew by team captain Nicole Tiamzon, Kathy Bersola, and Angeli Araneta.

The Diliman-based Lady Maroons are at sixth spot with a 2-4 win-loss slate, while Adamson is currently at third (3-2).
