UP heroine Nicole Tiamzon overcome by emotion as Lady Maroons savor view from top
The UP Lady Maroons now share the tournament lead with NU. Dante Peralta

UNIVERSITY of the Philippines’ stunning victory over defending champion La Salle is a big morale boost for the Lady Maroons, said outside spiker Nicole Tiamzon.

Tiamzon led UP to a 25-22, 25-21, 25-19 win over the La Salle on Wednesday, ending a 16-game losing streak to the Lady Spikers dating back to a win via technicality in 2008.

“Parang eye opener siya (panalo) para sa next games namin and parang mas mag pu-push kami na mag training para sa upcoming games,” said the graduating Tiamzon, who led UP with 16 points.

For a team that waited 13 long years before reaching the Final Four back in Season 78, Tiamzon could not help but to be overcome by emotions to see the Lady Maroons gain a share of the UAAP women's volleyball tournament lead with National University following a third successive victory.

“Nakaka-overwhelm and sobrang saya kasi ngayon lang namin natalo ang La Salle after ilang taon,” she said. “Syempre nakaka-boost ng morale, naglaro lang kami kanina and stick  sa game plan.”

Tiamzon scored 16 points to pace the Lady Maroons, but shared that it was a collective effort from everyone beginning with the scouting of La Salle to make the upset win a reality.

“Kasi kami tinuturuan ng coaches mag scout sa sarili namin, ‘di pwedeng wala kaming alam pag papasok sa court, kami pinagaaralan namin the whole team, nagtulung-tulong kami,” she said.
