Final faceoff in NCAA volleyball as EAC, St. Benilde clash in title decider

EMILIO Aguinaldo College and College of St. Benilde go at it one final time as the Generals and Blazers clash in the decider of the NCAA volleyball finals on Monday at The Arena in San Juan City.

Drawing strength from another strong effort from Howard Mojica, the Generals eked out a 25-22, 21-25, 21-25, 25-15, 15-13 victory in the second match of the best-of-three series to forge a decider set at 2 p.m.

Mojica had 28 spikes and finished 33 points to keep the Geberals’ their hopes alive, while eclipsing St. Benilde's Johnvic de Guzman, came up with just 20 hits.

De Guzman and the Blazers drew first blood in the series, 27-25, 25-20, 23-25, 26-24.

“It will be a do-or-die so whoever has the stronger nerves will win it,” said St. Benilde coach Arnold Laniog, noting that they need to find a way to slow down Mojica.

“There is no way we can stop Mojica. What we can do is to find ways to make it difficult for him. If we can do that, we'll have a chance,” he said.

St. Benilde is aiming to win their first men's volleyball crown, while EAC is looking to score its first ever title in any sport in the senior's division since joining the league three seasons back.

“Hopefully we could win it this year,” said Laniog.
