Altas stay unbeaten after surviving five-set thriller vs Lyceum in NCAA men's volleyball

UNIVERSITY of Perpetual Help survived Lyceum, 25-17, 23-25, 19-25, 25-18, 15-9, to remain unbeaten in the 91st NCAA men's volleyball tournament at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Rey Taneo, Jr. fired 17 points while Ranidean Philippe Abcede and Allan Jay Salaan chipped in 14 apiece to help the four-time champions squeak past a tough Lyceum side.

The Las Pinas-based spikers pocketed their sixth win in as many outings and leapfrogged defending champion Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals (6-1) at the No.2 spot.

LPU dropped to a 3-4 card.

"The boys never gave up, that was the most important thing," said Perpetual Help coach Sammy Acaylar, who overcame two five-setter matches on a rainy day.

The Acaylar-mentored Lady Altas also overcame LPU, 18-25, 25-20, 25-15, 14-25, 15-11, to stay in the Final Four hunt with a 4-2 mark.

Cindy Imbo led UPH with 14 points, while skipper Ana Diocareza, Jamela Suyat, and Ma. Lourdes Clemente added 11 markers each.

The Lady Pirates dropped their third game in seven outings.

Meanwhile, in the juniors division, defending champion Perpetual Help stayed perfect in four matches after it trounced LPU, 25-10, 25-19, 25-17.

The Junior Pirates' record stands at 2-3.
