ATENEO ripped listless Adamson, 25-19, 25-18, 25-13, to take solo third spot in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament on Saturday at The Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Eagles made it back-to-back wins, this time scoring an easy victory over lowly Adamson after a tough five-setter against the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws.

Michele Morente led Ateneo with 12 points and five digs, while Jhoana Maraguinot and Bea de Leon added seven markers apiece in the one hour and 11-minute match.

With head coach Anusorn Bundit still in Thailand, Lady Eagles assistant coach Sherwin Meneses called the shots for the second straight match. It was Meneses’ first match against former team Adamson after he stepped down midway through last season.

“First two sets lumaban talaga sila (Adamson) kaya hindi easy win kasi syempre lumalaban din,” he said.

It was the third win in four matches for Ateneo, moving to third behind National University and University of the Philippines, both unbeaten at 3-0.

Ateneo also got contributions from the reserves, with Ana Gopico scoring five, Kim Gequillana delivering five points, while Juliane Samonte and Ponggay Gaston scored two each.

“Pare-parehas lang din naman sila ng training eh so kung sino ang magpo-produce ng point at saka kung sino ang makakagawa ng pinapagawa siya ang ipapasok,” explained Meneses.

“So kagabi sa tune up game maganda rin ang nilaro ng mga stringers so ‘di naman sila nagulat na pinasok sila,” he added.

Ateneo had seven service aces, while Adamson was not able to score from the service line.

Team captain Jema Galanza scored eight points for Adamson, which absorbed its fourth straight loss, tied at the bottom with University of the East.
