Ateneo, FEU score big wins to share lead after first round of UAAP volley elims

ATENEO and Far Eastern University scored big wins on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena to share the lead after the first round of the UAAP volleyball tournament.

The Blue Eagles drubbed La Salle, 25-16, 28-26, 25-22, for their sixth straight win and a 6-1 record.

Their only loss came at the hands of FEU, which also improved to 6-1 with a 27-25, 22-25, 25-23, 36-34 win over skidding University of Sto. Tomas.

Marck Espejo scored 21 points, including three service aces, for Ateneo.

Ron Medalla and Chumason Njigha had eight points each.

"Masaya in a way na mas lalo naming minamahal ang isa't isa. What I tell them is, what's important is to love each other," said Ateneo coach Oliver Almadro.

"Kasi from love, andoon na lahat eh. Tiwala, faith, 'yung sakripisyo, mararamdaman mo kasi you put love in everything you do."

Raymark Woo scored 11 points, while Rjay Onia had 13 for the Green Spikers, who fell to a 3-4 card.

Jude Garcia led the Tamaraws with 19 points, while Redijohn Paler added 16 markers.

The Tigers suffered their third loss in a row for a 3-4 slate despite 21 points from Arnold Bautista and 20 from Joshua Umandal.
