Unbeaten Lady Stags find way to outlast Letran even with Soltones far from best form
Grethcel Soltones was not at her best against the Lady Knights.

SAN Sebastian survived a gritty Letran, 28-26, 25-14, 24-26, 24-26, 15-7, to claim a share of the lead with defending champion St. Benilde in the women's division of the 92nd NCAA volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan City on Friday.

Joyce Sta. Rita, Nikkma Mariel Dalisay, Dangie Encarnacion and Katherine Villegas picked up the slack when reigning back-to-back MVP Grethcel Soltones struggled by firing 15, 12, 12 and 11 hits, respectively, to seal the Lady Stags their third win in row.

Soltones had a hard time finding her rhythm but still wound up with 15 points, 12 of which came on kills.

San Sebastian coach Roger Gorayeb, who missed their first two games because he was out of town, said his team was overconfident.

"It's a simple case of overconfidence that it almost cost us the game," said Gorayeb. "This is a single-round robin elimination and all the games here matter. Every game is a championship game."

It was another heartbreaker for the Lady Knights as they absorbed their third straight five-set defeat after losing to the Lyceum of the Phl U Lady Pirates, 21-25, 25-16, 21-25, 25-22, 15-10, on Nov. 14 and St. Benilde, 27-25, 25-23, 22-25, 7-25, 12-15, Sunday.

San Sebastian made it a twin victory over Letran with a 16-25, 25-19, 25-17, 16-25, 15-13 triumph for its first win in three starts in the men's side.

The Knights fell to 1-2 (win-loss).

In juniors' action, Letran trounced San Sebastian, 25-12, 25-16, 19-25, 25-21, to improve to 2-1.

The Staglets slid to their second loss in a row.
