New UST coach Kungfu Reyes vows wholesale changes, spartan training for Tigresses

UST girls' volleyball team coach Emilio 'Kungfu' Reyes has been tapped to handle the Tigresses in the UAAP.

Reyes, also an assistant coach of the Philippine Army volleyball team, replaces Odjie Mamon as Tigresses coach. Vilet Ponce de Leon and Ian Fernandez were retained as assistant coaches.

“Madami magbabago,” said Reyes. “Ang character bilang isang Tomasino gusto ko ma-instill sa kanila, ’yung drive manalo win or lose no regrets kasi binigay nila ang best nila.”

“Mas magiging rigid ang training, mas magiging hard training. May kasama na military training kasi gusto ko ‘yung mentality as a fighter talaga.”

UST has missed the UAAP semifinals for three straight years but Reyes boldly declared his target is to reach the finals.

“Pumasok ako sa UST, I mean business,” Reyes told “Nangangarap ako hindi lang Final Four kundi finals. Gusto ko ’yung masanay sila manalo.”

Reyes won a championship as a player for UST in 1999, 2001 and 2003 and was part of the team that placed runner-up in 2000 and 2002.

He was a longtime assistant to Francis Vicente before taking over the UST girls’ team in 2013 and winning four junior girls’ titles. As an assistant with the Army Lady Troopers, Reyes has won three titles in the Philippine Super Liga and two in the V-League.

“Syempre I’m working with the best (Army) kailangan namin (UST) maging the best rin,” he said.

Reyes was officially presented as new head coach on Friday but was actually on his sixth day of practice with the Tigresses.

“Sana maging masaya sila pero hindi dapat. Hindi naman ako magpapahirap, hindi ang alam ko ang ituturo ko sa kanila, ang kailangan nila ang ituturo ko sa kanila.”
