LA Salle moved closer to a third straight championship, beating Far Eastern University, 29-27, 25-21, 25-22, in the opener of the best-of-three finals of the UAAP Season 80 women's volleyball tournament on Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum.

Kim Dy had 10 points, while May Luna came off the bench to score nine.

Majoy Baron and Tin Tiamzon had eight points each for La Salle, which looks to claim the title on Wednesday.

“Well pipilitin namin na makuha 'yung Game One, kasi mahirap na pag umabot pa ng Game Three,” said La Salle coach Ramil de Jesus, who is eyeing his 11th title in the UAAP.

Although it was a straight-set victory, the veteran mentor cited that the game could’ve gone the other way had they lost the opening set.

La Salle was already ahead, 24-21, before FEU mounted a comeback to threaten the back-to-back champions.

“Kung hindi namin nakuha 'yung first set, hindi magkakaganon,” said de Jesus. “Sa kanila (FEU), basta gumalaw sila ng tama, dire-diretso eh.”

“Kahit malayo ka, hindi ka nakakasiguro. Kaya sabi ko, mas ano lang, mas gumawa lang ng tama,” he added.

La Salle is looking to record its third three-peat after 2003-2005 and 2011-2013.

Graduating FEU spiker Bernadeth Pons had nine points, 17 digs and 12 excellent receptions.

The Lady Tamaraws committed 34 errors.
