Almost but not quite as overexcitement got better of Lady Maroons, admits Bersola

UNIVERSITY of the Philippines ace blocker Kathy Bersola admitted overexcitement kept the Lady Maroons from pulling off a king-sized upset to start the New Year in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament.

The Lady Maroons came close to handing defending champion Ateneo its first loss of the season, but came undone under pressure and lost a heartbreaking five-setter, 25-18, 22-25, 25-20, 15-25, 15-11, on Sunday.

The Katipunan-based school stretched the Lady Eagles to a deciding fifth set after Bersola, team captain Nicole Tiamzon, and Angeli Araneta took over in the fourth to even the contest.

But Alyssa Valdez took charge for the Lady Eagles in the final frame to sustain Ateneo’s unbeaten slate.

“I think it’s overexcitement,” Bersola told “’Yung sobrang gustong-gusto manalo kaya medyo na divert ‘yung focus.”

Ateneo committed more turnovers than UP (37-35), although the Lady Maroons’ six untimely errors in the fifth and deciding set cost them the game.

“Tapos ang daming na-commit na errors, hindi na kami naka-stick sa game plan,” said Bersola.

UP remained in sixth spot with a 2-4 win-loss card, while Ateneo kept its unblemished slate at 5-0.

UP absorbed its second five-setter loss of the season after 25-21, 19-25, 25-23, 12-25, 9-15, setback to National University last November 29.
