FOTON spiker Sisi Rondina played like she’s fighting for dear life after she and Patty Orendain faced RC Cola Army A tandem of Jovelyn Gonzaga and Nene Bautista in the Philippine Super Liga Beach Volleyball Challenge Cup finals.

The Foton duo fell to the much experienced pair of Gonzaga and Bautista, 18-21, 21-18, 13-15, on Sunday at the MOA Sands by the Bay, but they put up a valiant stand, especially with the all-out effort from the pint-sized open spiker from University of Santo Tomas.

“Tyaga lang, ang lakas ng kalaban natin, magkamatayan na,” Rondina told her partner during one of the timeouts in the third set.

Those who heard the Cebuana hotshot were stunned and amazed by her fighting spirit, but it came as no surprise to her opponent Gonzaga.

The Philippine Army corporal knew all along what she and her partner were going up against the young volleybelle.

“As always, given na ‘yun, Rondina is a bomb,” said Gonzaga. “Bomba talaga siya maglaro.”

Gonzaga was also amazed how the 19-year old Rondina and Orendain thought of a game plan to outwit them later in the second set.

“Napag-aralan namin ni Nene na noong later part noong second set na-target ako and out of nowhere nagkamali ako,” she admitted. “And sabi namin ni Nene, sige try natin targetin si Rondina baka ganon din ang maging feeling niya na siya naman ang tatargetin.”

Gonzaga and Bautista later leaned on their experience to counter Rondina’s fighting spirit en route to claim the title.
