ADAMSON University is off to a shaky but winning start, surviving a huge fightback from University of Santo Tomas, 25-22, 25-21, 20-25, 28-30, 16-14, on Wednesday in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament the Philsports Arena.

Jessica Galanza came up with a service ace to seal the win and cap her 28 point-performance.

Galanza scored 25 on attacks, with three on serves including a sharp delivery that dropped down the middle of the UST side.

Adamson skipper Mylene Paat scored 19 and May Roque added 13 markers for Adamson, which needed

two hours and 32 minutes to finish the match.

Cherry Rondina scored 30 points for UST, fellow sophomore and new UST team captain Laure finished with 15 points, and Ria Meneses added 13.

"Mahalaga ang panalong ito kasi ramdam namin ang conditioning dapat sa five sets na laro hindi ka mapapagod," said Adamson coach Sherwin Meneses.

Adamson used a 7-2 run capped by a Paat service ace to take the lead in the fifth set, 8-6.

The Lady Falcons were at the brink of winning the match, 14-12, but UST saved the match point twice after EJ Laure scored on a combination play and Paat's down the line attack went out, 14-14.

But Paat made up for her mistake and blocked Cherry Rondina's attack and Galanza's service ace sealed the win.

"’Yung leaders namin medyo bumigay sa dulo ng third and fourth sets buti na lang naka-recover," said Meneses.

"Sobrang gusto ko ang nangyari na na-test ang character ng team kasi nareresolve kung sino ang leader sa team, mahalaga nag-step up lahat ng players," he added.

Adamson shares the early lead with Ateneo and University of the Philippines, while UST joined opening day losers National U and University of the East in the lower half of the standings.
