ATENEO took only 59 minutes to defeat De La Salle-Dasmarinas, 25-12, 25-17, 25-13, on Monday in the Spikers’ Turf Collegiate Conference at The Arena in San Juan.

Ishmael Rivera and UAAP back-to-back Most Valuable Player Marck Espejo combined for 19 points as Ateneo scored its second win in as many matches for the solo lead in Group B.

Russian-American recruit Anthony Koyfman and skipper Ysay Marasigan added seven markers apiece for Ateneo, while Rex Intal and rookie Ron Medalla contributed six points each.

The Eagles needed four sets to beat La Salle last week and Ateneo coach Oliver Almadro was much more satisfied this time.

“Kung last week ang sabi ko ang first six ko kulang sa aggressiveness, ngayon ok naman,” said Almadro. “Medyo bumabalik na ulit ang aggressiveness ng first six ko so malaking bagay ’yun para sa mga rookies ko.”

“I always tell my first six na they should be the instrument para dun sa mga rookies to step up. Siyempre kapag nakita ng mga rookies ang level of play ng mga beterano, susunod din sila.”

Ateneo had more blocks, 8-2, registered six service aces against only one by the Patriots and came up with 22 digs compared to 15 from the Dasmarinas players.

Ish Polvorosa recorded 31 of the Eagles’ 37 excellent sets, while the Patriots had a team total of 17.

Ateneo had 17 excellent reception, with nine coming from Manuel Sumanguid, while the entire La Salle Dasmarinas squad had six.

But the numbers hardly impressed Almadro.

“Konti pa, hindi pa sila 100 percent,” he said.

Bryan Castro had seven points for La Salle Dasmarinas, which fell to the bottom with a 0-2 card.
