St. John’s Institute of Western Visayas stuns NCR squad National University in five to rule GVL League of Champions
St. John’s Institute caps its successful campaign after a dominating performance in the regional eliminations

WESTERN Visayas recovered from a bad start to turn back National Capital Region, 25-27, 22-25, 25-13, 27-25, 15-13, to rule the Shakey’s Girls Volleyball League Season 12 League of Champions on Sunday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

Represented by St. John’s Institute, the Bacolod-based lasses put on one big play after another after falling two sets behind.

Princess Robles, Therese Maravilla, Catherine Pollentes, Jewel Maligmat and Sylvia Araneta combined in the huge big third set fightback then sustained their form to outduel their fancied rivals from National University to snatch the crown.

The 15-year-old Robles was named MVP and best opposite spiker, while Pollentes took the best setter plum. Kristine Magallanes of NCR was picked best libero, Faith Nisperos was named best outside spiker, Caitlin Viray won the award for best middle blocker, Southern Luzon’s Jewel Encarnacion was the second best middle blocker and Southern Mindanao’s May Luna was named second best outside spiker.

Other members of the Western Visayas team were Kristianne Cortez, Glaudine Troncoso, Lyka Yusay, Jane Hachero, Nicole Escares and Hannah Infante with coaches Peter Yusay and Roberto Lozada and assistant coaches Michael Baloyo and Mae Ang.

Southern Luzon edged Southern Mindanao, 25-16, 22-25, 25-18, to take third place in the league sponsored by Shakey’s and organized by Metro Sports, and backed by Mikasa, Asics, Volley Prep, Nature’s Spring, Sun Star, The Freeman, Cebu Daily News, Chooga, El Lobo Energy Drink and Millenia.
