Like his namesake the Pope, UE coach Francis Vicente keeps his hopes up despite winless run
Francis Vicente remains positive about the UE Lady Warriors' bid despite going winless in seven games after the first round of the UAAP women's volleyball tournament.

UNIVERSITY of the East coach Francis Vicente in still in a positive mood despite his Lady warriors going winless in the first round of eliminations in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament.

The Lady Warriors are currently at the bottom of the pack with a 0-7 (win-loss) card right in Vicente’s first season with the team.

Likewise, the team has yet to win a set in the league’s 77th season.

Still, Vicente has high hopes for his team come the second round.

“Tingnan natin ulit, syempre hindi naman ako nagi-give up sa mga bata. Lahat naman sinu-sulusyunan namin kung ano ang nagiging problema,” he said.

“So unti-unti ina-analyze namin kung ano ang mga mali mula sa coach hanggang pababa. Hindi naman lahat inaako sa player lang, tinitignan namin lahat ng anggulo bakit nagkakaganoon,” he added.

The veteran mentor likewise sticks to his goal of at least a sixth place finish for UE at the end of the season, and he said the path toward that objective begins with the Lady Warriors trying to end their dry spell.

“Marching order is to get a win, snap the losing skid,” said Vicente.

“Stick pa rin ako sa goal na number six rank. Ang kailangan lang namin alisin yung pagka-zero ng team, kailangan lang makapanalo kami ng isa o dalawa,” he added.

Vicente wants his players to know and feel how it is to win a match.

Vicente is not new to winning, being the former coach of University of Santo Tomas’ girls volleyball team which he steered to three straight championships behind Ateneo star Alyssa Valdez and La Salle's Kim Fajardo.

He was also coach of the National University women’s team that first made it to the Final Four behind towering sisters Dindin and Jaja Santiago.

Now, Vicente wants the winning tradition to rub off on the Lady Warriors.

“Mabago yung trend para makita nila ‘yung saya ng nananalo ang team, kailangan maramdaman nila ‘yun kahit rank No. 8 at least hindi naman zero, at least nalaman nila ‘yun,” he said.
