VAKIFBANK Istanbul advanced to the semifinals via straight-sets win over Bangkok Glass, 25-19, 25-23, 25-18, in the FIVB Women’s Club World Championship at the Mall of Asia Arena on Friday.

Lonneke Sloetjes led the way for VakifBank Istanbul with 17 points, and Gozde Kindar added 11.

“Every time I play against a team from Thailand, I’m always very fascinated with the way they play volleyball at this level without a lot of height,” said VakifBank Istanbul coach Giovanni Guidetti.

“But they play incredible volleyball. They’re an example to everybody, technique is more important than the body,” he added.

From a close 17-16 slim lead in the third set, VakifBank romped with a 7-1 run to reach match point before Pleumjit Thinkaow’s attack error sealed the win for the Turkish team.

The Turkish club, which came from a thrilling five-setter loss to Volero Zurich on Thursday night, improved to 2-1 and joined Volero Zurich in the Final Four.

VakifBank Istanbul will face Eczacibasi VitrA Istanbul in the knockout semifinals on Saturday.

“It’d be an amazing game, two very strong teams (up against each other), Eczacibasi is a phenomenal team with all the big names in volleyball are playing in that team. It will be a high level volleyball,” said Guidetti.

“Like my captain said, the one who wants to win more (will win),” he added.

Wilavan Apinyapong made 14 points, all from spikes, for Bangkok Glass, which remained winless in three games in the elimination round.
