POMI Casalmaggiore survived a thriller of a match and turned back Rexona Sesc Rio, 17-25, 25-20, 25-20, 19-25, 18 16, in Pool A of the FIVB Women’s Club World Championship at the Mall of Asia Arena on Wednesday.

Samantha Fabris unloaded 24 points for the Italian team, while Lucia Bosetti added 16, Jovana Stevanovic chipped in 13 and Lauren Gibbemeyer had 10.

Carol da Silva pushed the Brazilian team to a second match point, 15-14, but her own service error tied the contest. Gabi Guimaraes gave Rexona Sesc the lead, 16-15, before Fabris postponed the South Americans’ early celebration, 16-16.

Pomi Casalmaggiore grabbed the match point, 17-16, before a block on Guimaraes sealed the win for the European champs.

After an opening-day loss, Pomi Casalmaggiore dragged Rexona Sesc Rio down, 1-1.

Guimaraes paced Rexona Sesc Rio with 29 points, while Netherlands national team star Anne Bujis added 18.
