FEU spikers break five-year hex with thrilling victory over Ateneo Lady Eagles

TONI Rose Basas hit two service aces in the fifth set and Far Eastern University edged Ateneo, 19-25, 25-21, 18-25, 25-20, 15-9, on Sunday in the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Basas scored 14 points, including six of the team’s 20 service aces, while skipper Bernadeth Pons had an all-around game of 14 markers, 13 digs and 16 excellent receptions.

It was the Lady Tamaraws' first victory over the Lady Eagles since the second round elims of UAAP Season 75.

“Sa amin it’s ano ’to pampa-high morale sa mga players kasi knowing Ateneo ang tinalo namin,” said FEU coach George Pascua. 

FEU fought back from a 1-6 deficit, with Basas’ aces helping push the Lady Tamaraws to a 12-9 lead,

The Lady Tamaraws scored three straight points —Ateneo committed an error, Pons pushed FEU to match point before Kat Tolentino’s hit sailed long.

“Sinabi ko hindi naman natatapos ang volleyball sa 6-1 eh, so sabi ko keep fighting lang,” said Pascua.

“Kilala ko ang players na ’yan pagdating sa maturity, pagdating sa ganoong situation, alam nila i-handle kasi ine-ensayo namin ‘yan so alam nila kaya confident ako na kayayanin nila,” he added.

Jhoanna Maraguinot had 21 points for Ateneo, while Tolentino scored 14.
