FAR Eastern University got back on the winning track by downing University of the East, 25-18, 25-11, 21-25, 25-14, in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament on Sunday at The Arena in San Juan.

Sophomore spikers Toni Basas and Heather Guino-o each had 15 points while skipper Mary Palma finished with 11 makers for the Lady Tamaraws, who bowed to La Salle Lady Spikers , 27-29, 23-25, 20-25, on Wednesday.

The Morayta-based school, now with an even 1-1 slate, needed just an hour and 50 minutes to clinch the win.

“Para sa amin, honestly speaking, hindi ok (ang laro) kasi ang ganda ng first two sets namin,” said FEU coach Shaq delos Santos.

“But of course hindi naman masasabi agad na ganoon kadali o ganoon kabilis (matatalo mo ang kalaban). So ang good thing lang, thanks God lang 1-1 na kami,” he added.

FEU missed the services of top hitter Bernadeth Pons and libero Kyla Ateinza due to a scoliosis problem and shoulder injury, respectively.

Delos Santos said he could’ve fielded his two key players, but opted to sit them out for the girls to completely recover.

“So ayun ang problema niya (Pons) noong isang araw medyo sumakit na naman (ang likod niya) pwede namang pilitin pero mahaba pa naman ang liga,” he said.

“Baka next week pa makakabalik (si Ateinza) ayaw rin kasi naming pilitin, mahirap din,” he added.

But the veteran mentor is not yet pressing the panic button as he sees several of his players stepping up for their fallen teammates.

“Sabi ko nga sa kanila, nagagawa niyo naman ‘yung mga kayang gawin ng mga wala so cover up lang natin, tulung-tulong lang,” he said.

Ma. Shaya Adorador poured in 23 points for the Lady Warriors, but her efforts went down the drain as the team’s losing streak had been extended to 47 dating back to 2012.
