UNIVERSITY of the Philippines started the second round on a winning note, edging Adamson University, 25-18, 14-25, 25-19, 21-25, 16-14, o in the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball tournament on Saturday at The Arena in San Juan.

Skipper Tots Carlos led the way with 22 points, while Isa Molde added 18, Marian Buitre chipped in 12 and Rose Mary Cailing registered 32 of UP’s 34 excellent sets.

The Lady Maroons improved to 3-5, bouncing back from a loss to National University, while sending the Lady Falcons to their second straight loss. Adamson also holds a 3-5 win-loss record.

“There’s a saying, once bitten, twice shy, so as we were fighting we were trying not to lose twice to the same team,” said UP coach Godfrey Okumu. “But we are still buillding one game at a time.”

Adamson looked set to finish the match at 14-13 but Carlos saved UP with back-to-back points and Ayel Estrañero sealed the win for the Lady Maroons.

“Sobrang ganda ng depensa ng Adamson, hindi ‘yun papatalo ng basta-basta,” said Carlos. “Teamwork lang talaga ang nagpanalo sa amin.”

Adamson team captain Jema Galanza scored 19 points, Chiara Permentilla added 17 and Mylene Paat contributed 14.
