Cignal turns back Mega Builders to move a win away from clinching PVL Open crown

CIGNAL moved a step closer in winning the title after it denied Mega Builders, 25-23, 21-25, 25-19, 25-17, in the men's division of the Premier Volleyball League Open Conference finals on Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan.

Skipper Ysay Marasigan led the way for the HD Spikers with 21 points, while Edmar Bonono and Peter Torres added 14 and 11 markers, respectively, in Game One of the best-of-three championship series.

"One down, but it’s not yet done. To get the championship, you win two games. The job is not yet done. We have to step up pa," said Cignal coach Oliver Almadro.

Cignal looks to finish the series in Game Two on Saturday.

"Sabi ko, before you win, you have to believe you can win. Hindi pwedeng puro power, hindi pwedeng puro talent," said Almadro.

National team member Bryan Bagunas made 14 points for the Mega Builders, while Francis Saura and Fauzi Ismail combined for 24 markers.

Meanwhile, Air Force demolished Sta. Elena, 25-22, 25-22, 23-25, 25-16, to move a win away from the third place.

Jeffrey Malabanan made 19 points for the Jet Spikers, Rodolfo Labrador and Howard Mojica each had 14 markers and Edwin Tolentino had 12.

Berlin Paglinawan finished with 15 points for the Wrecking Balls, Israel Encina added 11 and Joven Camaganakan chipped in 10.
