UST star Sisi Rondina beaten but unbowed, vows to bounce back strong from tough loss to UE

A FRUSTRATED Sisi Rondina emerged from the dugout after University of Santo Tomas absorbed a four-set beating from University of the East, 23-25, 25-18, 26-28, 24-26, in the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan.

The UST top hitter, who stepped away from her teammates during the singing of the school hymn after the match, was lost for words when a handful of reporters asked her about her thoughts on the loss.

The Lady Warriors scored their first win over the Tigresses in the Final Four era, which started in 1994.

“Wala akong ibang masabi eh kundi, bibitaw na lang ako (ng salita) na tatrabahuhin na lang talaga namin (ang next games),” said Rondina.

The fourth year UST hitter, who led all scorers at the end of the first round, came up with 25 points and 19 digs in a losing effort.

The Tigresses, in fact, could’ve won the game if only they knew how to finish the job.

UST spiker Carla Sandoval committed back-to-back errors in the first set when the game was tied, 23-23. In the third set, the Tigresses were already at set point, 24-20, and in the fourth set the España-based squad was one point away from extending the match, 24-22.

Still, Rondina, the team’s energizer bunny, vowed to give all that’s left in her powers for UST to bounce back.

“Wala akong ibang masabi talaga, promise. Ano na lang, ipaglalaban na lang namin kung ano ‘yung pa ‘yung kaya naming ilaban sa sarili namin and lalong lalo na sa university namin,” she said.

It was UST’s fourth straight loss as it dropped to the seventh spot, tied with UE (2-6).
