ATENEO moved to a share of first place in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament, toppling erstwhile unbeaten University of the Philippines, 25-14, 25-19, 25-21, on Sunday at the Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Eagles scored their fifth win in six outings, paving the way for titleholder La Salle to move up the standings and pushing the Lady Maroons to second spot with a 4-1 win-loss record.

Jhoana Maraginot and Bea de Leon had 11 points apiece, while Michelle Morente added 10 markers and eight digs in the one-hour and 13-minute match.

What was expected to be a tight matched turned out to be a rout as the Lady Eagles put on a show in front of former team captain Alyssa Valdez.

The three-time MVP flew in from Thailand for the tryout for the national team in Davao on Saturday and returned to Manila to see the Lady Eagles play.

“Hindi expected na three sets, kasi contender talaga ang UP ngayon,” said Ateneo assistant coach Sherwin Meneses.

“Simula noong dumating si coach Tai noong Monday (from Thailand after missing two matches) nag prepare na ang team para sa UP,” he added.

“Service receive talaga kami ng isang linggo.”

“Malaking panalo ’to para sa amin kasi tie kami sa No. 1 ng La Salle, pag kalaban mo ang La Salle kailangan mataas ang kumpyansa mo,” said Meneses.

Kat Tolentino also had nine points for Ateneo, while skipper Jia Morado and Maddie Madayag added six markers apiece. The Lady Eagles limited their errors to 14.

Isa Molde and Diana Carlos scored 12 points each for UP.
