DEFENDING champion Ateneo clobbered winless University of the East, 25-7, 25-17, 25-8, on Saturday to keep its slate unblemished in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

Reigning MVP Alyssa Valdez fired 23 points for the Lady Eagles, while Amy Ahomiro and Michelle Morente added 10 markers apiece as the Lady Eagles scored their seventh win in as many matches to join La Salle on top of the standings.

That sets up a tantalizing showdown between last year’s finalists as Ateneo and La Salle clash for the first time this season on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

“We're preparing every game and we play two games in a weekend so hopefully maganda ang advantage namin we're really working hard,” said Valdez, whose Lad Eagles completed the rout in just 65 minutes.

Ateneo took the first set in only 18 minutes and led by as many as eight points, 12-4, in the second, although Valdez admitted they did relax a bit after the solid start.

“Sa second set hindi maiiwasan, after ng first set, medyo naging complacent kahit hindi namin aminin pansinin it shows sa second set,” said Valdez.

Bien Juanillo made five points for UE, which ended the first round of elimination with a 0-7 win-loss card.
