ATENEO barely kept its record spotless, stretched to the limit by lowly University of the Philippines, 25-18, 22-25, 25-20, 15-25, 15-11, on Sunday in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

Reigning MVP Alyssa Valdez came up with 25 points for the Lady Eagles, Bea de Leon added 12 and Amy Ahomiro chipped in 11 markers as the defending champions scored their fifth win in as many matches.

“Namiss namin ’yung feeling na maglaro sa Arena,” said Valdez. “Out of focus kasi holidays, I’m really thankful that we won kahit most of us were off.”

It was a see-saw match that Ateneo could not control, and UP looked to have gained the upper hand with a 25-10 fourth set.

The Lady Eagles posted a 5-2 lead in the fifth behind Valdez but simply could not break away, with the Lady Maroons making it 10-11 at one point.

Ateneo finally got a big run going in the end, scoring four of the last five points of the match to take the win.

Earlier in the match UP was unstoppable with Nicole Tiamzon, Kathy Bersola and Angeli Araneta taking charge.

Nicole Tiamzon scored 22 points for the Lady Maroons, who absorbed their fourth loss in six games.

Kathy Bersola scored 12 and Angeli Araneta added 11 for UP.

“UP played really well, sobrang tiyaga and sipag,” said Valdez. “This game would be one of the most memorable.”
