ATENEO handed National University its second straight loss, 25-22, 25-16, 25-17, in the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball tournament on Saturday at The Arena in San Juan.

Skipper Maddie Madayag, Jules Samonte and Jhoana Maraguinot showed the way as Ateneo improved to 6-3 to join NU and Far Eastern University in second spot behind La Salle (7-2).

Madayag scored 13 with six service aces, Samonte added 11 including four blocks, and Maraguinot chipped in 10 as the Lady Eagles avenged their first round five-set loss to the Lady Bulldogs.

“It’s a really huge boost in our confidence knowing that the teams that defeated us we can get back at them ’di ba?” said Bea de Leon, who scored nine markers for Ateneo.

“Sobrang laking bawi noon not only on the standings but for our confidence knowing that we can do it and there’s always… if you train hard enough and you work hard enough you can really get back up,” she added.

The Lady Eagles, who started the season with five-set losses to FEU and NU, are off to a strong start to the second round with straight set-victories against their first-round tormentors.

“I think everybody adjusted well kasi parang maganda naman ang pinapakita, kahit na may mali bumabawi naman,” said Madayag.

The teams each scored 27 on attacks but Ateneo scored 11 points on blocks against three by NU. The Lady Eagles also were solid from the service line with 14 aces against three by the Laduy Bulldogs.

Jaja Santiago scored 16 points for NU.
