Ateneo preserves unbeaten slate by turning back stubborn NCBA in Spikers' Turf

ATENEO showed enough composure to turn back National College of Business and Arts, 31-33, 25-18, 25-12, 25-21, to keep its unblemished record in the round robin quarterfinals of the Spikers’ Turf Collegiate Conference at The Arena in San Juan on Monday.

The Katipunan-based squad surprisingly lost in the first set that took 35 minutes to complete, but quickly recovered its bearing to complete a sweep of the next three sets for the win.

Star player Mark Espejo poured in 23 points for the reigning UAAP champions, who extended their winning run to six for solo top spot.

Espejo had 17 spikes out his total output while adding four blocks.

Joshua Villanueva had 14, Rex Intal added 12, and skipper Ysay Marasigan with 11 for the Blue Eagles.

Guest player Reyson Fuentes had 16 points for NCBA, which got a combine 22 from Paul Domingo and team captain Jason Canlas.

The Wildcats dropped to fifth spot with a 2-3 slate.
