ARELLANO University salvaged third place in the Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference after it escaped a late fightback from Adamson University, 25-22, 25-19, 19-25, 31-29, on Saturday at The Arena in San Juan.

Regine Arocha, Andrea Marzan and Necole Ebuen worked together offensively for the reigning NCAA champion Lady Chiefs, who pulled off the victory even without injured top hitter Jovielyn Prado.

Arocha finished with 19 points, while Marzan and Ebuen combined for 24 points, while best setter Rhea Ramirez dished out all of the team’s 31 excellent sets in a match that took almost two hours to finish.

Adamson looked to extend the match after it reached set point, 24-23, after a Bernadette Flora attack followed by an exchange of points that tied the contest, 29-29.

But Joy Dacoron’s error pushed Arellano at match point and Andrea Marzan’s block on Flora sealed the win for the Lady Chiefs.

Flora led the way for Adamson with 26 points but went down the drain, while Ely Soyud, who won the best open spiker, and Chiara Permentilla combined for 25 markers.
