ARELLANO University completed the upset of thrice-to-beat San Sebastian College-Recoletos, scoring a 25-15, 22-25, 25-23, 25-16 victory on Tuesday to claim the title in the NCAA Season 92 women’s volleyball tournament at The PhilSports Arena.

Jovielyn Prado, Regine Arocha, Andrea Marzan and skipper Rialen Sante capped their collegiate careers with a title as Arellano claimed its second title in the past three seasons.

Sante, Marzan and Prado each had 14 points, while Mary Anne Esguerra added 12, Arocha chipped in seven and Rhea Ramirez contributed six.

Arellano completed a sweep of the title showdown with San Sebastian, which for the second time could not cash in on the thrice-to-beat advantage.

AU coach Obet Javier admitted that he did not expect to sweep SSC.

“Hindi eh, pero kasi ‘yung sa practice namin, lalo na ‘yung papasok na kami sa step-ladder, nakita ko ‘yung dedication ng bata eh, talagang gusto-gusto manalo. So ‘yun ang kinapitan namin pare-parehas eh,” said the veteran mentor.

“Sinabi ko lang sa team ko na pag-trabahuhan natin ito ng maigi. Kung ano man ang magiging resulta, magpasalamat tayo,” he added. “Pero syempre, pilitin natin target-in ang dapat nating target-in.”

SSC was also in the same situation last season after sweeping the eliminations, bowing to College of St. Benilde in four matches in the finals.

Three-time MVP Grethcel Soltones failed on her mission to win a title in her five-year stay with SSC.

“‘Yung ginawa ng Benilde last year is napakaganda. Sabi ko nga, hindi naman masamang gumaya. Siguro naging isang inspiration namin yung ginawa nila,” said Javier.

“So sabi ko nga, wala namang masama eh. Subukan natin, baka sakaling ma-sweep pa natin ‘yung ano (finals). Hindi namin sukat akalain na ‘yun pala ang mangyayari,” he added.

“So ayun, nagpapasalamat ako sa Benilde kasi ang laking tulong ng ginawa nila sa amin nung time na nagharap kami sa stepladder semis,” he continued.

Soltones scored 25 points, all from spikes, to go with 17 excellent sets and 14 digs, while Katherine Villegas added 10, including the team's lone block point in the match that took an hour and 15 minutes.

SSC was zero in blocks in the past two games and committed a total of 111 in three games.
