WHAT was an expected tight battle turned out to be a walk in the park for Arellano University after it drubbed San Beda College, 25-17, 25-10, 25-17, in the NCAA Season 93 women’s volleyball tournament on Friday at The Arena in San Juan.

The defending champions Lady Chiefs remained unscathed in seven matches, their 19th straight win since last season, and imposed their might on the Lady Red Spikers, who came crashing back to earth after six straight victories.

Jovielyn Prado led the way for AU with 17 points, while Regine Arocha added 11.

“Motivated ang team namin manalo itong game sa Beda. Pinakamahalagang game sa elims kasi dito masasabi kung sino makakasweep,” said AU coach Obet Javier.

AU took an early 7-0 gap in the second set before the lead ballooned to 14, 22-8.

The Legarda-based squad continued to roll in the third set, 16-6, before SBC threatened, 17-21, but AU ended the match with four straight points.

The Lady Chiefs also had some help as the Lady Red Spikers gave them 31 points courtesy of their errors.

But Javier does not want to be complacent.

“Malaking factor ‘to kasi ‘di pa namin nasusubukan mag-sweep, kumbaga pagkapanalo sa Beda dapat mas magpractice pa, mas magpursige sa ensayo,” he said.

“Kasi two games na lang, makuha namin chance na mag sweep, sa practice uli dagdagan pa namin,” he added. “Kung ano kailangan improve dagdagan.”

Skipper Cesca Racraquin and Nieza Viray were only limited to just six points. Racraquin averaged 17.5 in their previous games, while Viray had 15.5 ppg.
