Arellano stuns San Sebastian in stunning start to NCAA women's volleyball finals

WHAT was expected to go down to the wire turned out to be a cakewalk for Arellano as the Lady Chiefs beat erstwhile unbeaten and thrice-to-beat San Sebastian College, 25-18, 25-20, 25-16, win in the opener of the NCAA Season 92 women’s volleyball finals on Tuesday at The Arena in San Juan.

AU got back at SSC, which completed a nine-match sweep of the eliminations, reducing the showdown into a virtual best-of-three series.

The second match is set on Friday.

The Lady Chiefs, who eliminated last year’s champion College of St. Benilde in the stepladder semifinals, shut down Grethcel Soltones and SSC could not find another offensive option.

The SSC belles are now in danger of a repeat of last year, when it also entered the finals with a thrice-to-beat advantage but lost the series to St. Benilde.

“Sabi ko sa kanila, ‘ilaro niyo dapat ang laro niyo, ’wag niyo isipin na dapat three times sila talunin, one game at a time lang,’” he said.

The Lady Chiefs had three blocks, while SSC was had zero rejections in the match that lasted only an hour and 20 minutes.

“Alam naman natin si Grethcel ang pinaka main (attacker) nila so kung gagawa siya dapat tumbasan namin,” said Javier.

Soltones scored 15 points.
