CHANCES of De La Salle star Ara Galang returning to the team for Season 78 of the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament will depend on her recovery from surgery after suffering ACL and MCL injuries last week.

School athletic director Nonong Calanog confirmed on Tuesday during the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum that Galang will be going under the knife after issuing an official medical bulletin that revealed the Lady Spikers skipper sustained tears on her ACL, MCL, and medial meniscus, plus a bone bruise in her left knee.

Calanog said Galang is now out of the hospital and resting at home as she waits for the swelling to subside, which could take around two weeks to a month, before undergoing surgery to reconstruct her knee.

He added recovery period could take six to eight months.

Calanog, however, said Galang suiting up for the Taft-based school for UAAP Season 78 will depend on how fast she recovers, citing the case of Aiko Urdas of National University who was supposed to have played this year only to sit out the entire season due to an ACL injury.

“We are hoping that she will be ready for Season 78,” Calanog said. “Ang fear lang namin is you can’t really say kung kailan ang recovery. Like Aiko Urdas, she was expected to be back but something happened during the recovery.”

Without Galang, who averaged 20 or more points this season, the Lady Spikers are hard-pressed to upend defending champion Ateneo, which enjoys a thrice-to-beat advantage in the Finals which starts on Wednesday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Still, Calanog hopes the absence of La Salle’s top player will be a big motivation for the underdog Lady Spikers.

“We hope that the thrice-to-beat (disadvantage) and the loss of Ara will be a rallying point for the team,” Calanog stressed.
