Actress Angelica Panganiban keeps promise by showing support for Alyssa Valdez
“Parang pantay-pantay lang kayo, nalalaman nila (fans) na ordinaryong tao lang din pala ako. Nalalaman nila na may mga idol din pala ako,” says actress Angelica Panganiban, an avid Alyssa Valdez fan. Mei-Lin Lozada

THAT thing called idol.

Showing the fan in her, actress Angelica Panganiban went all in support of her idol Alyssa Valdez by cheering for the charming Ateneo volleyball star during the game against De La Salle in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday afternoon.

Shortly after the Lady Eagles turned back the Lady Spikers, 25-20, 21-25, 25-23, 27-25, to book an outright finals berth, Panganiban, along with director Andoy Ranay and another friend, went out of their way and followed Valdez inside the press room, where the star player was having a  post-game interview.

“Lakas maka-tao,” said the lead star of the movie That Thing Called Tadhana as she waited for Valdez to finish the post-game interview. “Parang pantay-pantay lang kayo, nalalaman nila (fans) na ordinaryong tao lang din pala ako. Nalalaman nila na may mga idol din pala ako.”

Just a week ago, the young actress posted a screen grab of her conversation with Valdez on her Instagram account (@iamangelicap) where the Ateneo player told her she watched the movie currently showing on local cinemas.

In return, Panganiban promised to watch the game, wear the jacket given her by Valdez, and put on a blue lipstick symbolic of Ateneo’s colors.

True to her promise, the mestiza actress showed up and watched the game from courtside of the  Mall of Asia Arena.

Panganiban admitted she became a big fan after watching last year’s UAAP Finals between the Lady Eagles and Lady Spikers. From then on she never missed an Ateneo game, watching either live on on television.

“After nung finals last year lagi na kami nanonood. 'Pag wala nakukuhang ticket, sa bahay na lang,” said the versatile actress, kidding sportswriters by asking for 'passes' to the finals.

“Baka naman may ticket kayo dyan? Passes kaya?” she said.

Panganiban said she prefers watching volleyball over basketball.

“Hindi kasi ako nagba-basketball, volleyball (pinapanood ko kasi) lakas maka-girl,” she said.

When told the Kapamilya actress was in the press room, Valdez expressed shock and said she was star-struck to see Panganiban in person.

“Oh my god ang ganda niya para naman ako naging katulong,” said the Ateneo star with a laugh.

But asked why she was rooting for Ateneo and not La Salle, Panganiban kidded that it was based on nothing more than geography.

“Malapit kasi ang bahay ko sa Ateneo. La Salle kasi malayo,” she smiled. “Sa Katipunan kasi ako nakatira.”
