Alyssa Valdez believes thrice-to-win Benilde spikers can mirror Ateneo dream run

ATENEO and Alyssa Valdez have done it before, and the Lady Eagles star believes a team like St. Benilde can duplicate the feat of surviving the stepladder semifinals and toppling a thrice-to-beat squad in the title series.

The Lady Blazers pulled off a four-set win in the opener of the NCAA volleyball finals against erstwhile unbeaten San Sebastian, wiping out the Lady Stags' advantage and turning the series into a best-of-three affair.

St. Benilde is now also two wins away from matching Ateneo’s triumph in the UAAP two seasons ago, when it also gurdled the stepladder semifinals before turning back thrice-to-beat La Salle in the finals.

Valdez believes St. Benilde can pull it off, interestingly against an SSC side handled by her former coach Roger Gorayeb.

“Masasabi ko lang wala talagang impossible, just don’t give up,” said the UAAP back-to-back MVP. “Enjoy the game, you’re already there, just give their best everytime.”

“‘Yung result ibibigay naman ni God basta just give their best everytime,” she added.

The second match is set on Friday at The Arena in San Juan.

“Kung sino lang ang may heart strong ang mananalo,” said Valdez.

“For sure they both deserve to be the champion and we’ll be there to celebrate with them, but syempre St. Benilde naman won’t just give the win to Baste naman. So it’s gonna be a good volleyball game so may the best team win.”
