La Salle-Ateneo showdown draws biggest crowd for an elimination-round match in UAAP women's volley

THE first ever showdown this season between rivals Ateneo and La Salle in the elimination of the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament turned out to be a blockbuster as a total crowd of 18,489 turned up at the Mall of Asia Arena on Sunday.

Volleyball fans filled the Pasay venue to get a glimpse of what this early is already being billed as a fourth straight possible title showdown between the league’s top two teams.

Ateneo star Alyssa Valdez readily thanked the fans for coming over and hopes more fans will be watching when the Lady Spikers and Lady Eagles face again in the second round.

“Yey!” exclaimed Valdez when told about the record crowd for an elimination round game.

“Thank you so much, first round pa lang. Sana sa second round mas madami tayo para mas masaya. Sa MOA Arena or sa Araneta or kahit saan man ganapin,” she said.

Scalpers made a killing as fans bought tickets even if it cost three times its original price.

Patron tickets valued at P350 were sold as high as P1000; Upper Box passes worth P175 went as much as P300, while General Admission tickets that cost P75 were priced at around P200-300 each.  

During last year’s title-clinching Game Four which Ateneo won, a crowd of 21,314 crowd watched at the MoA.
