Gamboa Coffee scores first victory, keeps Café Lupe winless in PVL Open

GAMBOA Coffee Mix bagged its first victory and kept Cafe Lupe winless, 25-21, 25-22, 18-25, 27-25, in the Premier Volleyball League Open Conference on Sunday at The Arena in San Juan.

Alfredo Pagulong scored 13 points, Angelino Jose Pertierra added 12 and Mark Egan had 11 as Gamboa Coffee Mix scored its first win after four losses.

Gamboa Coffee Mix was able to score 49 attack points despite Cafe Lupe’s solid defense at the net with 17 blocks.

John Millete had 18 markers, Paolo Lim chipped in 11 and Joshua Castillo contributed 10 for Cafe Lupe, which remained winless in five outings.

Meanwhile, Army kept its semis hopes alive with a thrilling 25-23, 24-26, 25-21, 21-25, 15-11 victory over Instituto Estetitco Manila.

Romnick Rico led the way for the Troopers with 19 points, skipper Benjaylo Labide had 15, Manuel Medina made 13 and Antonio Torres added 11.

Army improved its win-loss record to 2-3, matching Sta. Elena at fourth.

Mark Christian Enciso tallied 26 points for IEM, while Ferdan Guanzon had 14, Kurl Rosete added 13 and Michael Conde poured in 10.

The absence of top hitter Greg Dolor, who is in Suwon City, South Korea for the national team’s two-week training camp, was a big blow for IEM as it dropped to 2-4 win-loss card at sixth spot.

Undefeated Mega Builders (6-0) and Cignal (5-1) have earned the first two spots in the semifinals, while Air Force (4-2) is secured of at least a playoff for a semis spot.
