SAN Sebastian rode on another strong effort by Gretcel Soltones as it turned back Lyceum of the Philippines, 20-25, 25-13, 25-11, 25-14, on Thursday to move one step closer to an elimination round sweep in the 91st NCAA women's volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
The power-hitting Soltones, the reigning league MVP, had a match-best 27 points including 24 on kills as the Lady Stags booked their eighth straight win.
San Sebastian plays St. Benilde in its final elimination-round match, and victory will earn the team an outright finals berth and send the playoffs into a stepladder system instead of a crossover Final Four.
"She carried us through again, she really wants to win," said San Sebastian Roger Gorayeb of the high-scoring Soltones, who fired 13 in a 25-11, 25-17, 25-15 victory over Letran last Tuesday.
In men's play, LPU trounced San Sebastian, 24-26, 25-21, 25-18, 25-21, in a non-bearing contest to end its campaign with a 4-5 card.
The Stags fell to 3-5.
