COLLEGE of St. Benilde scored a twinkill over Lyceum on Thursday to reach the second round of the men’s and women’s volleyball competitions of the 90th NCAA season at The Arena in San Juan.
The Blazers turned back the gritty Pirates, 25-18, 25-19, 24-26, 25-17, to book a berth in the next phase alongside the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals, Perpetual Help Altas and Arellano University Chiefs.
St. Benilde finished third overall with a 7-2 (win-loss) record behind a vastly improved EAC, which swept the first round in nine matches, and reigning three-peat titlist Perpetual Help, which wound up second with an 8-1 card.
Skipper Johnvic de Guzman led all scorers with 22 hits while Marjun Alingasa and Racmade Etrone scattered 13 apiece to power the Blazers to their seventh victory against two defeats.
The Lady Blazers, meanwhile, whipped the Lady Pirates, 25-18, 25-17, 25-17, to also advance to the round-of-four with the Arellano, Perpetual Help and San Sebastian.
Team skipper Jaenette Panaga and Jannine Navarro had 12 hits each to propel Lady Blazers to their seventh win against two setbacks.
The Lady Pirates finished the year with a 3-6 win-loss card.
