San Beda overcomes Lyceum in five sets in NCAA women's volleyball

    Jan 4, 2016

SAN Beda outlasted Lyceum, 21-25, 25-23, 25-15, 21-15, 15-12, on Monday in the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

Nieza Viray scored 25 points, Satrianni Espiritu added 14 and Iris Domingo had 11 as San Beda improved its win-loss record to 3-5 while Lyceum dropped to joint fourth at 4-4 with Jose Rizal University.

Undefeated San Sebastian (6-0) and defending champion Arellano University (6-1) have secured semifinal berths and look to secure twice-to-beat advantages. A sweep will give San Sebastian an outright finals berth with the next three teams battling in a stepladder playoff.

JRU downed Mapua, 25-18, 25-23, 25-16, to keep its semifinal bid alive.

Rosalie Pepito powered the Lady Bombers with 17 points, from 13 attacks, three block kills and a service ace, while Shola Alvarez had 14 points.

JRU earned 31 extra points from Mapua’s errors as the Lady Cardinals remained winless in eight outings.

The Lady Bombers need to beat Arellano and hope College of St. Benilde (5-1) won’t get its sixth win in its remaining three assignments.
