ARELLANO University shook off a sluggish start to beat Jose Rizal University, 26-28, 25-6, 25-15, 25-20, in the NCAA Season 92 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan.
Jovielyn Prado scored 18 points, skipper Rialen Sante added 15, Mary Anne Esguerra chipped in with 13 and Regine Anne Arocha contributed 10 for Arellano.
The Lady Chiefs scored their fifth straight win after losing the season opener against San Sebastian (6-0).
Arellano is in a three-way tie with defending champion College of St. Benilde and Lyceum of the Philippines University (5-1).
“Ang target namin na manalo nangyayari, ’yun nga lang sa game kanina ang mga players ko masyadong in-underestimate ang kalaban nila, which is mali naman talaga kaya ’yun ang ita-tackle ko sa kanila mamaya,” said Arellano coach Obet Javier.
“Ipina-realize ko sa kanila na kapag ganyan ang mangyayari ay pwede tayong bumaba sa rankings at pwede tayong malaglag kung saka-sakali. Eh buti naman nag-response ng maayos,” he said.
JRU team captain Shola Alvarez scored 17, while Rosalie Pepito added 14 points.
The Lady Bombers bowed out of the semifinal race after dropping to 2-5.
