THE UAAP rivalry between Ateneo and National University has spilled over in the Spikers’ Turf after the two schools arranged a title showdown on Wednesday following a sweep of their respective semifinals series at The Arena in San Juan.
The Bulldogs clinched the first finals berth after turning back reigning NCAA champion Emilio Aguinaldo College, 25-19, 25-22, 22-25, 25-22.
The Blue Eagles followed suit later with a 25-19, 25-13, 25-22 triumph over National College of Business and Arts.
Both Ateneo and National University swept their respective best-of-three semifinals series.
Game 1 of the finals is set on Monday between the two teams that battled the men’s championship of the UAAP last March won by the Eagles.
Madzlan Gampong fired 19 points to lead in the Bulldogs, who had three other players finishing in double figures.
Bryan Bagunas added 17 markers and Fauzi Ismail and Kim Malabunga chipped in 12 and 10, respectively.
Howard Mojica had another monster performance of 31 points for the Generals, but the NCAA reigning Most Valuable Player failed to lift his team in forging a rubber match.
Mojica anchored his points from 27 spikes, while Hariel Doguna finished with 11.
Carlo Glorioso scored off a quick set at center to snap NCBA’s back-to-back hits and finish off the Wildcats in 69 minutes, keeping the Eagles’ unbeaten run all the way to the championship of the league presented by PLDT Home Ultera.
