FAUZI Ismail scored 23 points as National University moved closer to the finals with a 25-23, 26-28, 25-18, 26-28, 15-11 win over Emilio Aguinaldo College on Monday in the Spikers’ Turf Collegiate Conference Final Four at The Arena in San Juan.
Ismail scored all but one of his points from attacks, while Madzlan Gampong chipped in 15 markers as NU drew first blood in the best-of-three series.
Francis Saura scored 13 points, including four blocks, while Bryan Bagunas and Kim Malabunga registered 12 markers each.
“Bata pa talaga ang team marami pa kaming dapat ayusin sa blocks, services and receptions,” said NU coach Dante Alinsunurin of his squad, which committed 41 errors.
“Sinabi ko sa kanila na wala kayong dapat gawin kundi focus muna. Lahat ng inensayo niyo gawin natin,” Alinsunrin added.
The second match is set on Wednesday.
NU had a chance to close out the match in the fourth set consecutive errors, including one from the service line by Ruben Baysac and a wide attack by Malabunga allowed EAC to extend the match.
NU seized a 13-6 lead in the final set and inched its way to victory.
Howard Mojica scored 35 points, Hariel Doguna finished with 18 markers, while Israel Encina had eight for EAC.
