UNIVERSITY of the East’s struggling women’s volleyball program got a major boost after the hiring of national mentor Francis Vicente as head coach of its UAAP team.

UE athletic director Rod Roque confirmed that Vicente is now the coach of the UE team, replacing Boy Dalistan after a series of losing campaigns for the school including a winless stint in Season 76.

Vicente will now try to turn around the fortunes of the school that has not won a UAAP title since it shared the trophy with Far Eastern University in the 1972-1973 season.

The Recto-based school has yet to bag a crown despite being relatively a title contender in the junior girls division and a 10-time champion in the boys’ tournament.

A former national youth and University of Santo Tomas girls coach, Vicente returns to the UAAP after once serving as coach of the National University women’s team. He led the once struggling Lady Bulldogs to a Final Four campaign during the 2012-2013 season.

Vicente was the coach of the Philippine men’s team that saw action in the Asian Club Championship held here last month.

He also handles the PLDT squad in the Philippine Superliga.
