SHE was happy with the super sub role, but Myla Pablo got the surprise start and repaid her coaches’ faith.
Pablo came up huge as the Philippines scored a straight sets win over Kazakhstan on Saturday to reach the quarterfinals of the Asian Under-23 Women’s Volleyball Championship at the Philsports Arena.
Pablo didn’t expect heavy minutes, since she rarely attended the nationals’ practice due to commitments with her mother team National University and club Philips Gold, but had vowed to deliver quality play everytime her name is called. She finished with only eight points but gave instant offense to the Philippine squad, giving them another threat against Kazakhstan.
“Lagi kasi kaming may game kinabukasan. Nag-sosorry na lang ako kay coach Roger. Kaya kapag pinapasok ako, gusto kong patunayan na kaya ko,” said Pablo, stressing that she didn’t want to take away the minutes of other players who religiously attended practice.
“Sobrang saya kasi kahit papaano, binigyan ako ng chance ni coach Roger na pumasok kasi unfair naman sa iba dahil hindi ako nakakapag-training,” said Pablo.
The Philippines had a fine performance on opening day, but errors cost them in the match against Iran.
The decision to gamble was made by Philippine head coach Roger Gorayeb and head trainer Tai Bundit only on Friday night as they tried to come up with ways to boost the offense against the taller Kazakhs.
“Nag-usap kami ni Tai kagabi at kanina kasi ang problema namin, si Myla, hindi naman talaga nakakapag-practice. Dalawang beses lang siya sa amin.
“Yesterday, we were relying on the players na nag-papractice dahil alam na nila ang gagawin nila. Pero kagabi, sabi namin, subukan na namin siya because we are playing a stronger team than,” Gorayeb said.
“Napakaganda ’yung nangyari na nag-click agad,” Gorayeb said. “We never adjusted sa game. Si Myla lang ’yung nagbago at gumana agad.”
Gorayeb said she always knew that Pablo can deliver, even though she rarely attended practice.
“Kahit sa simula pa lang, linagay na namin siya sa utility dahil sa position na ’yun mapapakinabangan namin siya,” said Gorayeb.
