UNIVERSITY of Sto. Tomas got back on the winning track and handed University of the Philippines its first loss, 21-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-20, in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament on Sunday at the Arena in San Juan.
Milena Alessandrini showed the way for the Tigresses, scoring 22 points on 19 kills and three blocks to go with 15 digs and 10 excellent receptions.
UST and UP now hold 2-1 records, behind La Salle at 2-0.
Rookie EJ Laure scored 18 and graduating spiker Sisi Rondina had 17 points.
The other rookies also did fine as middle blocker KC Galdones had seven points, making five blocks, while MaFe Galanza nailed three service aces and dished out 20 excellent sets.
“Very unpredictable 'yung games namin, halos lahat ng laro. Everybody's game, until the last moment na kumukha kami ng puntos, doon mo masasabi na panalo ka na,” UST coach Kungfu Reyes said. “Mabuti naman, noong second and third, fourth, na-overcome naman namin ang mga errors namin. We're doing good that time. Nagde-deliver si UP so pinilit namin na tapusin lahat ng execution, from defense to attack hanggang sa mag-coverage kami.”
UST battles FEU (1-1) on Saturday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Tots Carlos led UP with 20 points, while Isa Molde scored nine spikes out of 34 attempts for 13 points including 14 digs.
Justine Dorog, who hurt her left knee in the fourth quarter, finished with 10 points, 19 digs and 11 excellent receptions.
UP setter Ayel Estrañero missed the match due to food poisoning. Rookie Marianne Sotomil had 32 excellent sets.
The Lady Maroons face the La Salle Lady Spikers (2-0) also on Saturday.
